About our Rose-Breasted Cockatoos

Birds Slider

Bindi & Capi, breeding pair, Rose-Breasted Cockatoos.

My husband and I lived in Alice Springs, Central Australia from 2000 to 2005. Every morning when I walked my dogs I would see hundreds of Rose-Breasted Cockatoos (called Galahs in Australia), they would be hanging upside down the electric lines, squawking and screeching, playful and full of life. They would then fly around in this huge pink and grey circle before settling down on the baseball field to eat grass seeds.

Because they are seed eaters, they are considered a pest, so buying 3 young birds and taking them back from Australia was perfectly legal, even if it involved lots of paperwork and legal documentation. But we were willing to do all that if in return we would be able to listen to these playful parrots, especially knowing we’d never go back to that beautiful country.
